Fight Fake Capacity Flash Memory

How Can You Spot Fake Flash Memory Chips? What Is the Key Factor That Determines If MP3 MP4 Players, USB Flash Drives Or Memory Cards Are Fake Capacity?

Posted by techchips on October 6, 2009

How can you avoid fake flash memory purchases? Do you know what fake capacity is? If you are not careful you could buy memory cards, usb flash drives or MP Players that have reprogrammed chips that lie about their real size. These are dangerous items as they cause people to lose their information!

So what is the easiest way to spot a fake?

See the short video presented by blueloyalpromo.

then read the rest of this article to learn how you can protect yourself from buying fakes. Please answer the questionnaire at the end – we need your opinions and data!

blueloyalpromo mentioned a grey market. This market is real. To learn how flash memory chips are graded Please read: Genuine Verses Fake Counterfeit USB Flash Drives – A Guide – USB Flash Chips Used – Grades A B C D . You need to be aware of grading for chips.

As blueloyalpromo mentioned, the strongest indicator of a fake is PRICE! The FrankenFlash Project’s reserach has found this true.

SOSFakeFlash documents fake flash memory products sold on eBay. Their eBay fake flash sellers Lists continues to grow as buyers report in. Sadly many did not know about the true cost of memory chips.

FlashDriveFacts attempts to promote awareness for both potential sellers and buyers. They have an extensive catalogue of brand names that have been counterfeited.

To avoid buying a fake as a consumer, or as a potential reseller, pricing is the most important factor. Prices in 2009 are going up for flash chips used in MP Players, memory cards, and usb flash drives, NOT DOWN!

If it is too good to be true it usually is.

This is what all frauded members on eBay say! It is a difficult lesson to learn.

In many cases as a result of searching for a bargain at unrealistic prices, people lose something far more important than money. They lose their data files, many forever. They did a “move” operation instead of a “copy” to the devices. Once the true capacity is exceeded on a flash memory chip that has been reprogrammed, only information about the file is copied, not the data. Sometimes even files that were copied to existing storage area are lost, it depends on how the flash memory was reprogrammed.

So how do you protect yourself?

1) Do not search for unrealistic prices.

2) Do your homework as to the cost of flash memory chips. blueloyalpromo pointed out that 80% of the cost of the item is the flash nand storage chip. Use the information from the articles to guide you.

3) Test any flash memory usb item you buy. Read the article: H2testw 1.4 – Gold Standard In Detecting USB Counterfeit Drives to learn about a free software for testing, how to use it and the download links to get the software.

H2testw is one of the best software to test and determine if your MP Player, memory card or usb flash drive is safe to use. H2testw has proven itself. Just see the poll in the article.

Best of all, H2testw is free! It is a stand alone programme and does not install all sorts of files. Buyers and sellers use it all the time.

If there is anything wrong the memory storage capacity reported to an operating system with your MP Player, memory card or usb flash drive, H2testw will tell you. It will also tell you about the quality of the memory chip. For example if you bought an item advertised as 4GB you should expect to have the program report 3.9 GB capacity (a result of the formatting overhead). If the program tells you that only 3.7GB is available or less, then you have an item with an inferior flash memory chip. You can expect the item to have a shorter life span.

blueloyalpromo says that:

“over a million fake usb flash drives are sold every month”.

This is no idle claim. The FrankenFlash Project believes that they are underestimating, it is probably much higher! Unfortunately both resellers and buyers are so ill informed, they dive to snatch up the cheapest priced products. The end result? Frauded buyers and sellers hounded by victims who lost both money and information.

This is not a subject that gets a lot of exposure. It is a horrible secret. If you want to buy an MP Player, memory card or usb flash drive on the internet, be careful!

If you bought an item on eBay and it turns out to be a fake, please report to SOSFakeFlash immediately using the Report A Fake Tab.

To avoid a fake, understanding the true costs of flash memory chips is key!

I have a MP4 touch 32Gb from China when I first connect the
USB to PC WinXP it says that that there is a trouble in the connection but it works (in my PC Win2000 I can’t transfer files because it freeze and I have to reset my PC to work again). When I created a sub-past in video past of MP4 it makes crazy and created multiples files with the same name and when I try to delete it didn’t allow me (I think that are bad blocks and MP4 lost itself with it). I can’t see anymore the new files that I transfered to MP4 when I turn on it. I can only hear and watch the song and video that came on it – my new files didn’t appear anymore (I tried to calibrate and the scream seems blue – I had to reset it, because it didn’t answer anymore). (My MP4 software is TV569 MLC V3.0.3.1 and Hardware is TV1F569_V1.0). I don’t know what to do. Thanks for any help – Claudia. (Do I need to format my MP4? How I do it? Can I format it with Win XP format application? Do I need to updated the Firmware too? How can I do it?)

  50. […] The problem on eBay is seven years old. For five years, information on the internet was isolated and hard to find. In the spring of 2008, members decided to do something about the issue as eBay refused to. A project was founded and called the FrankenFlash Project. The early months were secret, gathering information. Overwhelmed by the number of victims, they decided to launch an internet site,SOSFakeFlash. Soon other sites joined the project. The reason the project was founded was not simply because of the millions of dollars involved, but because of the damage reprogrammed flash memory chips do – data loss. The project was co founded, by eBay victims and eBay Sellers of fake memory who were also victims not realizing they has purchased false capacity items. Over one million flash memory chips are reprogrammed every month to lie about their actual capacity. […]

Yes those who are determined to sell false capacity memory are doing anything they can to continue.

    The video https://flashchiptech.wordpress.com/2009/10/06/how-can-you-spot-fake-flash-memory-chips-what-is-the-key-factor-that-determines-if-mp3-mp4-players-usb-flash-drives-or-memory-cards-are-fake-capacity/

explains that over 1 million are sold every month.

The problem is that most consumers (buyers) have no clue. The FrankenFlash Project does it’s best to expose sellers.

However, the real issue is consumer awareness, to educate the public. It is slowly increasing. Perhaps too slowly.

We have a number of goals and increasing visibility to the problem is the most important. If this increases it will help deal with those who sell fake memory items.

If you want to help, Elliot write an article. Create a web page, and link to our sites. Visit internet forums and blogs and let them know about our sites.

We are not naive. The oldest members knew from the beginning that this would be a difficult battle and would take a lot of time to address.

If it is a losing battle, why do eBay sellers get suspended more quickly? Why does eBay for example race to suspend and remove evidence? Why do more victims get refunds from paypal? In the early days almost no one got a refund and eBay ignored people. Both Paypal and eBay do not ignore us anymore. eBay races to suspend sellers and remove information on listings as fast as they can. In 2005 to 2008 it was not like that, they simply ignored members!

The most important thing? Raise the visiblity of the problem! In as many languages and internet sites as possible!

Our site just received a request to use information here and we were happy to approve. People many read and use the information at any of our sites. The only thing we ask is that they include URL address references to our orginal articles to build search engine strength for them and for us.

We encourage, Elliot, people to write articles in languages other than english! The FrankenFlash project has encouraged comments at the sites in languages other than english too.

This is a global issue. Everyone is invited to participate. We encourage people to write at their own sites and we write articles that reference and point to their articles.

Warning the public is priority number 1. Removing the sellers is priority number 2.

  52. Elliot said

Listing the fake sellers is a losing battle. They have caught on to this and change names weekly, complete with fake feedback…..

  53. Elliot said

Another immediate clue is if a seller says his chip won’t work with Panasonic. Panasonic camera logic spots and rejects the fake chips immediately!

Is there any way we can get through to Ebay? They appear not to have a clue or to care!
